Visitors to Downtown Hays will have a new place to gather or stop for a rest with the construction of a new pavilion and restroom facility adjacent to Union Pacific Park thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Foundation to the Downtown Hays Development Corporation.
The 40 X 80-foot pavilion will be located in a field just east of Main Street along 10th Street. It will be used for a variety of events including concerts, and parties. It will be available for public use and to rent for private events. It will be the new home for the Downtown Hays Farmer and Arts Markets. Developers believe it will draw additional visitors to the downtown area to eat and shop.Grant funds will match private dollars already secured for the project to purchase building materials. Labor will be provided by students in the Applied Technology Construction Management Program at Fort Hays State University and by City of Hays employees. The pavilion will be available year-round and will include public restrooms. The concept for the construction was part of the Hays comprehensive plan adopted in 2012 and will further connect the downtown area with the Fort Hays State campus.
