A $4,200 grant from the Foundation to Ogallala Commons will support the work of a college intern this summer.
Ogallala Commons is nonprofit, community resource network that provides leadership and education to help rural communities in a six-state Great Plains region.
The intern will assist the Central Growers Cooperative, which serves Smith, Phillips and Norton counties. Work primarily will include research to identify gaps in the local foodshed to help producers in the region with opportunities to diversify crops and better meet the needs of consumers. In addition, the intern will prepare reports and information that will be distributed through social media as well as traditional channels.
The Ogallala Commons Community Internship program has provided young adults with work experience in rural communities across the High Plains. Nearly 300 interns have gone through the program since 2007. Nearly 70 percent of interns who have been through the program stay or return to their hometowns or regions.
