A $27,000 grant from the Foundation to the Friends of Grinnell will help fund renovations to the former band room at Grinnell Grade School to create the Grinnell Daycare Center.
The project was initiated after a community survey conducted in January revealed that there were at least eight families this fall would not have access to daycare. The new facility will serve 10-12 children up to age 4 and is scheduled to open in August. If there is a need, an additional classroom could be made available to expand the daycare.
USD 291 is stepping up to help. Once the renovations are complete, the school district will lease the space to a certified daycare provider on an annual basis. The district will continue to support the program by paying the utilities and providing basic equipment.
Others in the community also are helping. The Grinnell Education Association is providing teaching supplies, the Grinnell Activities Program is providing playground equipment, and Friends of Grinnell is assisting with additional equipment needs and will be providing volunteer hours. Others providing volunteer time include the After Harvest Committee and the Grinnell Area Business PRIDE. PRIDE also is assisting with funding and equipment needs.
