A $7,500 grant to the Wallace County Health Department will be used to purchase new hearing and vision screening equipment.
The Health Department currently has no hearing or vision screening equipment. Children referred to the department for these services either must be screened using school equipment during school hours, or travel to another community.
The grant will purchase Tympanometer/Audiometer for hearing tests and a Spot Vision Screener for visual testing. Purchasing the equipment will allow the Health Department to provide follow-up or second screenings for infants who fail the initial hospital screenings, and to serve pre-school and home school children.
Adults will also benefit, as the screenings can detect hearing loss in adults as well as children; nearsightedness, far-sightedness and other vision concerns.
The grant will be matched by the Wallace County Health Department to complete the purchase.
