The Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to Ronald McDonald House Charities in Wichita. The grant will cover the expenses for a guest room at a Ronald McDonald House for 375 days as part of the Adopt A Room program.
There are two Ronald McDonald Houses in Wichita, one near Wesley Medical Center and one near Via Christi Medical Center. Families that live more than 30 miles away with a child or children age 21 or younger seeking medical treatment are eligible to stay at a house regardless of ability to pay. The houses serve families from every one of the 105 counties in Kansas.
Many families in northwest Kansas travel to Wichita hospitals for specialized pediatric services, including severely premature births.
The grant from the Hansen Foundation will help parents and caregivers spend more time with their child and be available to interact with their care providers. Having parents close and more continually present has positive benefits including decreased anxiety, decreased length of hospital stay and reduced rates of hospital readmission. Families also experience a comforting lodging experience with less stress due to financial obligations and the support of Ronald McDonald staff and other families in similar situations.
