The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Program was aided by a grant from the Hansen Foundation. The program has seen examples of measured health improvement in many athletes derived from participation in this program. For many of our athletes and family members, hearing the facts about healthy vs. unhealthy habits from a qualified health professional in a relaxed one on one setting has made a tremendous impact that stretches beyond our Special Olympics athletes and into their homes, families and those around them. Several of our athletes have begun to work out with friends, neighbors and people that they’ve met in exercise classes and at the gym. Stories from the athletes show how serious many of them have become about diet and exercise. One athlete lost more than 100 pounds and competed at World Winter Games this January in show shoeing against other Special Olympics athletes from all over the world!
