Thanks to a grant from the Hansen Foundation this pediatric ultrasound equipment saves Northwest Kansas families from driving more than an hour for similar services. A touching story illustrates the importance of the new equipment: During a routine six-month check-up, the examining physician detected a heart murmur. To confirm, a pediatric echo was ordered and the image showed a hole in the infant’s heart. The new equipment and clarity of image provided made it possible to conduct this examination close to home, rather than having the family travel several hours. Although the diagnosis was not what they hoped, the family was able to move forward with treatment for their child immediately, instead of waiting for an appointment somewhere else, and driving to that location.
