A new pavilion and restrooms in downtown Hays has been completed thanks in part to a grant from the Hansen Foundation. The newly completed gathering place has already been utilized for a wide variety of events including a craft beer festival, the Hays Arts Council Spring Art Walk, and the Hays Public Library Herb Day. Upcoming events include weddings, nonprofit events and a graduation ceremony. Students from Fort Hays State University participated in building the pavilion. Fall and Spring classes provided nearly all of the labor, helping keep costs down but also providing excellent experience for the students. Several students from the class took such pride in this project that they didn’t want to walk away without seeing it finished. Some re-enrolled in the class for spring, and others donated their hours receiving nothing, no compensation and no grade. To secure additional funding bricks, cornerstones, and benches were sold. Some of the contractors on the job donated portions of their work and the City of Hays contributed as well.
