Staff and volunteers at 11 museums throughout Northwest Kansas learned best practices for proper archival storage and collections digitization, as well as receiving professional advice to redesign exhibits and improve collection preservation techniques.
Most of the costs of the services of Jenny Tracz, of Fair Isle Preservation Services, were covered by grant funds. Tracz conducted full-day visits to the museums, sharing her expertise with volunteers and staff, as well as conducting workshops for member organizations of the Northwest Kansas Museum Coalition.
Weaknesses in collections management and museum practices were addressed, and techniques were suggested to mitigate problem areas. During workshops, museum representatives learned to cost-effectively build their own blueboard storage boxes and hanging bags with padded hangers. Many museums operate on limited budgets, so blueboard was purchased and shipped in bulk.
