GOVE – Hard feelings caused when a church closed have been resolved by a community effort to renovate the former church building into a community center and handicapped-accessible storm shelter.
The city of Gove purchased the United Methodist Church building, which had been used as a community storm shelter even when it was a church. Now the building will be available for gatherings of all types. It will also house a fitness center.
The new Gove Community Center provides more space than was previously available for community events, and it has a kitchen. Events had been held in a building with no kitchen.
Grant funding helped pay for some costs of improvements to the building. The project also received strong community support both from donors and volunteers.
