ATWOOD – A new automated hematology analyzer purchased in part through grant funds has increased the speed, accuracy and reliability of complete blood count (CBC) results, a test run on almost every Rawlins County Health Center patient requiring lab work.
Lab staff conducted a CBC on a recent trauma patient who had been run over by a bull, getting immediate results that indicated the patient’s condition was stable. An hour later, the CBC was repeated to check for internal bleeding. A significant drop in the count indicated internal bleeding was present, and the patient was transferred for surgery. Without the new piece of equipment, this patient’s outcome may not have been successful.
