Oakley hosts national cornhusking competition

OAKLEY – In the 50th year that Oakley hosted the Kansas state cornhusking contest, the national contest and festival were held there the following day.

The contests, held Oct. 16 and 17 in a cornfield near the fairgrounds, revived the old-time hand husking contest of pre World War II. Oakley hosted 97 contestants from Kansas and eight other states for the national event.

FFA students volunteered for the event, coordinating horse teams with contestants, timing contestants and assisting with weighing corn.
