OAKLEY – Teenagers involved in the Future Philanthropist Program in Oakley developed the idea to beautify the community with concrete planters. They wrote grants, presented the idea at a city council meeting and found additional funding when shipping costs increased.
Now they are watering flowers growing in the 23 600-pound purple planters they succeeded in placing throughout Oakley’s public spaces.
Grants from the Hansen Foundation and the Logan County Community Foundation helped cover the cost of purchasing the planters. The City of Oakley determined their placement for traffic safety, as well as providing heavy equipment and employees to place planters. Assistance was also received from American Implement, Diamond B Greenhouse, Oakley Farm and Home and Eberle Construction.
In addition to weekly watering, the FPP’s future plans for the planters include adding seasonal decorations and LED lights.
