RUSSELL – Playground equipment that resembles an old streetscape from the front and has slides and a climbing wall on the back has made a visit to downtown Russell decidedly more fun for children.
The front of the play equipment purchased with grant funds features a jail, a hotel, a hardware store and a blacksmith shop. All are named after businesses originally in Russell.
An additional part of the project that cleaned up a blighted lot in the downtown area was construction of a public restroom and visitors’ center. The building was made to resemble an old gas station that once stood on the property. Partners in the project were the Downtown Revitalization Committee and Russell County Historical Society, with help from the city of Russell, Russell Main Street, Russell Pride and Russell Rotary.
