Parents As Teachers makes difference

SMITH CENTER – A family that moved to Smith Center from South Africa and a family whose baby was not meeting developmental milestones both got the help they needed from a family educator that does home visits as part of the Parents As Teachers program.

In 2021, the parent educator worked closely with the immigrant family, helping them obtain citizenship and enroll older children in school. The family is thriving in the area and recently bought their first home. The parent educator referred the baby for needed physical therapy to strengthen neck muscles.

PAT aims to increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices, provide early detection of developmental delays, prevent child abuse and neglect and increase school success. The program in Smith, Osborne and Phillips counties is partially funded through a Hansen Foundation grant.
