Preserving history digitally

Volunteers for the Ellsworth County Historical Society have utilized a new computer and software to digitize nearly 2,000 photographs and documents so far as part of the Ellsworth County Preservation Project.

The Past Perfect software designed primarily for museum use is allowing Ellsworth County history to be preserved in an easily accessible way.  The project has greatly benefited from the services of 90-year-old volunteer , Pauline Zvolanek, who spends hours carefully removing photos from frames and cleaning frames for re-display or storage.  If a photo is too large to scan, she photographs it on a digital camera and assigns an identification number, provides an extensive description to be entered into the computer and applies a preservation sleeve or cover . Her goal is to get all photos preserved, which will keep her busy for years to come.
