High School Seniors: HANSEN CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION
$4,000 Annually Renewable for 1 Additional Year
One hundred scholarships of $4,000 each are available to encourage students who seek competence through career and technical education (1 or 2-year programs) at the following schools in Northwest Kansas: North Central Kansas Technical College (Beloit and Hays), Colby Community College, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Academy of Hair Design (Hays and Salina), Cloud County Community College, Salina Area Technical College, Fort Hays State University (2-year program), or Kansas State Polytechnic (2-year program).
The Career and Technical Education Scholarships carry a stipend of $4,000 and are renewable for one additional year, providing the recipient has achieved at least a 3.00 GPA at the college level. With one renewal, the scholarship will be $8,000 over the two-year period. Students seeking a 4-year degree are not eligible.
Students may obtain application forms from high school principals or counselors. These forms must be completed and received by the Foundation office by October 20, 2023.
Three letters of reference are due in the Foundation office by October 20, 2023. It is the student’s responsibility to see that reference letters are received by the Hansen Foundation. One letter of reference must be submitted by either your high school counselor or principal.
CONDITIONS Applicants must be full-time students who will graduate in the current academic year from a high school in the 26-county area of Northwest Kansas. Applicants should display good character. A 3.50 GPA is not necessary to apply for the Career and Technical Education Scholarship. There is no qualifying test for the Career and Technical Education Scholarship. Recipients may enroll in any career and technical education program, in any of the following Northwest Kansas schools: North Central Kansas Technical College (Beloit & Hays), Colby Community College, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Academy of Hair Design (Hays & Salina), Cloud County Community College, Salina Area Technical College, Fort Hays State University (2-year program) and Kansas State Polytechnic (2-year program) — as long as it does not lead to a four-year degree. All recipients must be enrolled as full-time students.
Dane G. Hansen Scholarships are available to students in the following Northwest Kansas counties: Cheyenne, Cloud, Decatur, Ellis, Ellsworth, Gove, Graham, Jewell, Lincoln, Logan, Mitchell, Norton, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Rawlins, Republic, Rooks, Russell, Saline, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Thomas, Trego, Wallace
Full-time high school seniors who will graduate in the current academic year from an accredited high school, registered independent, private or home school in the 26 county area of Northwest Kansas listed above may be eligible for the Hansen Leaders of Tomorrow, Hansen Scholar, Hansen Student and Hansen Career and Technical Education Scholarships.
Students seeking a 1 or 2-year associate degree program should apply for the Career and Technical Education Scholarship, and plan to attend one of the following schools in Northwest Kansas: North Central Kansas Technical College (Beloit and Hays), Colby Community College, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Academy of Hair Design (Hays and Salina), Cloud County Community College, Salina Area Technical College, Fort Hays State University (2-year program), or Kansas State Polytechnic (2-year program). Students seeking a 4-year degree program would NOT qualify for this scholarship.
Students interested in a Career and Technical Education Scholarship must submit to the Hansen Foundation a completed Application Form and three letters by October 20, 2023. One letter of reference must be submitted by either your high school counselor or principal.
Your High School Principal or Counselor will be able to supply you with a Career and Technical Education Scholarship application form.
With this application form, please include the following:
An official copy of transcript with GPA and rank in class circled.
Resume which includes a list of extracurricular and community activities in which you have participated in.
A one-page essay indicating why you want to pursue a Career and Technical Education program and how such a program of study will enable you to become a useful and successful citizen.
Three letters of reference. One letter of reference must be submitted by either your high school counselor or principal. It is the student’s responsibility to see that the reference letters are received by the Hansen Foundation office by October 20, 2023.
Scholarship payment will be made to the college or university chosen by the honorees. Funds will be drawn as stipulated by the administering agency, but only for the use of the honorees who shall be entitled to draw the full amount of the scholarships for educational purposes. Payments will be made to the school as soon as certification of full-time enrollment is received by the Hansen Foundation.
Scholarships may be partially or fully taxable. For degree candidates the part of the scholarship used for books, fees, tuition and other direct expense is tax free. The remainder, including the portion used for room and board, is taxable. It will be the recipient’s responsibility to keep records of the amounts received and the amounts paid for direct expenses. In addition, it will be the recipient’s responsibility to file income tax returns, if required.
Letters of acceptance of scholarships must be received by the Foundation by June 5, 2023. If not received by that date, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
Recipients of the Dane G. Hansen scholarships are expected to enroll as full-time students in appropriate institutions of higher learning without delay and in the fall term of the awarding year. Deferrals are rarely given and only under unusual circumstances. In such a case, the Hansen Foundation must be notified and a written request for postponement must be submitted for consideration by the Scholarship Committee. Failure to enroll in a qualified college or university by no later than the fall term of the next year will result in cancellation of any grant made under the Hansen Scholarship Program.
The Foundation Scholarship Plan has been approved as required by law in broader and more complete form than set out in this brochure. The Foundation reserves the right, in its discretion, to interpret and to deviate from the plan as stated here, but only if such interpretation or deviation is permitted by the approved plan.
