Special Olympics Kansas athletes lead the way to better fitness

An online effort to engage Special Olympics Kansas athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic was so successful that, in 2021, Special Olympics North America modeled a health and fitness program called SONA Move after the Kansas program.

Special Olympics Kansas engaged 258 athletes and caregivers to compete in the SONA Move Challenge. An emphasis was placed on athletes living in rural areas. Virtual workouts, miles walked, nutrition education and access were monitored throughout the year. The Kansas athletes competed with athletes from throughout North America and finished first!

Hansen Foundation grant funds helped cover the cost of providing virtual platforms, incentives for athletes and purchasing supplies.
