Russell program extends availability of food in summer

RUSSELL – There were a total of four weeks at the beginning and end of summer that the summer food program wasn’t active in Russell. A group of teachers, district staff, community leaders and local business owners partnered with Post Rock Family Services to feed kids during that time period as well.

From May 19- May 30 and July 28- August 13, free food was provided for any youth, ages 1-18. About 82 kids a day were served breakfast, lunch and supper through the program. The total served was nearly 1,100 kids.

The project demonstrated what happens when people put their minds together to help solve a serious problem within their community. A group from all walks of life got together and served more than 2,600 meals, ensuring no kid had to go hungry over the summer.

A Hansen Foundation grant helped fund the effort.
