Burn structure adds to firefighter training in Goodland

GOODLAND – The Goodland Training Site has become the regional hub for firefighter training in Northwest Kansas. The centerpiece of that training is a burn structure that provides firefighters with a controlled live fire environment to better prepare them.

The structure, including a three story expansion, was built out of shipping containers and welded together by Northwest Kansas Tech students. Grant funds covered the cost of containers and materials. It has already been utilized extensively.

The building was ready for the 2023 Goodland Fire School and allowed instructors to teach to a higher level of competency. In addition to Northwest Kansas, students attended from other parts of the state, as well as Colorado.

Training scenarios and drills conducted during local training nights and regional schools have been greatly expanded.
