Documentary, exhibit help educate public about German family massacre

FORT WALLACE – A new exhibit and 50-minute documentary film about the massacre of the German family, which occurred 150 years ago in what is now Logan County, is being featured at the Fort Wallace Museum. The documentary called The Moccasin Speaks will air on Smoky Hill Public Television and other PBS stations in late November.

The moccasin worn by 12-year old Sophia German while she and three of her sisters were held captive by Cheyenne warriors and the hymnal owned by her father John German and used during the Civil War are part of the museum’s exhibit. Descendants of the German family visited the Fort Wallace Museum on the anniversary of massacre. They are pictured here with historians and others who participated in the production of the documentary.

A Hansen Foundation grant was part of the funding for the exhibit and documentary.
