Field trips focus on the Old West

Fifteen classes including nearly 560 students from Northwest and northcentral Kansas visited Kansas Historic Sites during the past school year and learned about Pawnee Indians and the pony express.

Grant funding covered the cost of admission and travel for students.

At Pawnee Indian Village State Historic Site, the field trips were all-day events, where volunteers demonstrated milling and craft-making. Students were served buffalo burgers for lunch.

At the Hollenberg Pony Express Station, students learned the Pony Express, the Oregon Trail and the California Trail.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to wear period clothing.
