FORT WALLACE – Nearly 1,000 youth and community members participated in the Fort Wallace Memorial Association History Education Days in September 2024, which focused on the pioneer experience.
Thirty descendants of the John and Lydia German family came to Fort Wallace to participate in the weekend. The family had been attacked by a band of Cheyenne while crossing in Logan County in a covered wagon in 1874.
Students were guided by volunteers among 13 stations sharing hands-on experiences with gold panning, bread baking, butter churning, a live oxen demonstration, sod cutting and buffalo hunting.
A Hansen Foundation grant helped cover expenses for the two-day event.
