Job Olympics teaches job and life skills

PHILLIPSBURG – Eighty-five students from 16 area school districts participated in the 23rd annual Job Olympics, which benefits students with disabilities.

Grant funding underwrote the costs of the event sponsored by the North Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative.

The event gave the students motivation to learn job skills while practicing prior to the competition, and it gave teachers a chance to incorporate important life skills.  Students were able to travel to Phillipsburg and meet new friends. Many of the students who attended are not able to participate in other school activities.

Each year, an unexpected outcome is the joy that this event provides. From the looks on their faces it is apparent that many participants experience more than a learning opportunity and an enjoyable day in a different type of classroom.
